Easy Install

To install PhotoJazz 2:

  1. Temporarily turn any virus-protection software off, and restart your computer if necessary;
  2. On a Power Macintosh, double-click on the InstallPhotoJazz icon;
    In Windows, double-click on the PhotoJazzSetup icon;
  3. Read and accept the license agreement;
  4. Choose the installation location using the pop-up menu at the bottom center;
  5. Click the Install button at the bottom right.
  6. In the Personalize BitJazz Tools window, fill in your name (required), company (optional), and serial number (required to unlock output).
  7. If you haven't purchased a PhotoJazz license, the default serial number, MDW2-A5RR-AF3ZJ, will apply magic watermarks to your output images.

The installer will install the following material:

BitJazz Tools 2.0: The BitJazz Tools 2.0 folder is installed in the location of your choice. All the BitJazz Tools files are installed in this folder.

On the Macintosh, the actual BitJazz Tools files (except the PhotoJazz engine) are only installed in the BitJazz Tools folder; Aliases to these files are put elsewhere on your system as necessary. This makes it easy for you to store a backup copy, see how much space it takes up, and deinstall virtually all of it without keeping the installer. (Because of a problem installing shared-library aliases in Mac OS 8.1, a copy of the PhotoJazz engine is installed in the Extensions folder instead of an alias.)

In Windows, the corresponding notion of shortcuts is not yet sufficiently well developed, so actual copies of the various BitJazz Tools files are put elsewhere on your system as needed.

BitJazz: The BitJazz state-of-the-art perfect-fidelity image compression engine is implemented as a shared library or dynamically-linked library to be used by all BitJazz Tools, as well as by third-party PhotoJazz-enabled plug-ins and applications.

On the Macintosh, a copy of the "BitJazz" shared library is installed in your "System Folder:Extensions" folder.

In Windows, a copy of the "BitJazz.dll" dynamically linked library is installed in your "Windows\system32" folder.

In either case, once the system is restarted, the latest BitJazz library is available for all BitJazz-aware applications to use.

PhotoJazz QT: PhotoJazz QT is a set of QuickTime components that import, decompress, compress, and export perfect-fidelity compressed PhotoJazz image files and movie frames.

To take advantage of PhotoJazz's QuickTime features, you must install QuickTime 4, which you can download for free from Apple's website. QuickTime authoring (compression and exporting) requires QuickTime Pro, which can be purchased on-line from Apple's website.

PhotoJazz QT is compatible with all applications that subscribe to the QuickTime Still Image or Movie protocols, including the PictureViewer and QuickTime Player applications that come for free with QuickTime.

The PhotoJazz QT components are installed in the "BitJazz Tools 2.0" folder.

On the Macintosh, an alias to the "PhotoJazz QT" file is installed in your "System Folder:Extensions:QuickTime Extensions" folder.

In Windows, a copy of the "PhotoJazz QT.qtx" file is installed in your "Windows\system32\QuickTime" folder.

On system start-up, QuickTime automatically registers the PhotoJazz QT components for all QuickTime-aware applications to use.

PhotoJazz: PhotoJazz is an Adobe® Photoshop® image file format plug-in module that opens and saves perfect-fidelity compressed PhotoJazz image files.

The PhotoJazz plug-in is compatible with all applications that support Photoshop File Format plug-ins, including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe ImageReady, and Adobe ImageStyler.

The PhotoJazz plug-in is installed in the "BitJazz Tools 2.0" folder.

On the Macintosh, an alias to the "PhotoJazz" plug-in is installed in your "Adobe Photoshop:Plug-Ins:File Formats" folder, if that folder can be found. Similarly, aliases to PhotoJazz are installed in your "Adobe Illustrator:Plug-ins" folder, if any; in your "Adobe ImageReady:Plug-ins:FileFormats" folder, if any; and in your "Adobe ImageStyler:Plug-ins:File Format" folder, if any. In each case, if multiple copies of an application are found, the installer lets you choose among them. If the installer fails to find the appropriate folder, or if you want to add PhotoJazz support to another application that supports Adobe-Photoshop File Format plug-ins, simply Command+Option-drag the PhotoJazz icon into the appropriate plug-ins folder in the Finder to make an alias copy. Or choose File > Make Alias in the Finder and drag the alias into the appropriate folder.

In Windows, a copy of the "PhotoJazz.8bi" plug-in is installed in your "Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop\Plug-Ins\File Formats" folder, if that folder can be found. Similarly, copies of PhotoJazz are installed in your "Program Files\Adobe\Illustrator\Plug-ins" folder, if any; in your "Program Files\Adobe\ImageReady\Plug-ins\FileFormats" folder, if any; and in your "Program Files\Adobe\ImageStyler\Plug-ins\File Format" folder, if any. In each case, if multiple copies of an application are found, the installer lets you choose among them. If the installer fails to find the appropriate folder, or if you want to add PhotoJazz support to another application that supports Adobe-Photoshop File Format plug-ins, simply press the PhotoJazz icon with the right-hand mouse button and drag it into the appropriate plug-ins folder in Windows Explorer, and then choose "Copy Here". Or select the PhotoJazz icon in Explorer and choose Edit > Copy, open the destination folder, and Edit > Paste it into the appropriate folder.

When you launch any of these Photoshop-host applications, it automatically registers the PhotoJazz plug-in for use in the application.

PhotoJazz XT: PhotoJazz XT is a Quark QuarkXPress image file format XTensions module that opens perfect-fidelity compressed PhotoJazz image files.

The PhotoJazz XT extension is compatible with QuarkXPress.

The PhotoJazz XT extension is installed in the "BitJazz Tools 2.0" folder.

On the Macintosh, an alias to the "PhotoJazz XT" extension is installed in your "QuarkXPress Folder:XTension" folder, if it can be found; If you have more than one copy of QuarkXPress installed, the installer lets you choose which one's extensions folder to use. If the installer fails to find the appropriate folder, or if you want to add PhotoJazz support to another application that supports QuarkXTensions, simply Command+Option-drag the PhotoJazz XT icon into the appropriate extensions folder in the Finder to make an alias copy. Or choose File > Make Alias in the Finder and drag the alias into the appropriate folder.

In Windows, a copy of the "PhotoJazz XT.xnt" extension is installed in your "Program Files\QuarkXPress\XTension" folder, if it can be found; If you have more than one copy of QuarkXPress installed, the installer lets you choose which one's extensions folder to use. If the installer fails to find the appropriate folder, or if you want to add PhotoJazz support to another application that supports QuarkXTensions, simply press the PhotoJazz XT icon with the right-hand mouse button and drag it into the appropriate extensions folder in Windows Explorer, and then choose "Copy Here". Or select the PhotoJazz XT icon in Explorer and choose Edit > Copy, open the destination folder, and Edit > Paste it into the appropriate folder.

When you launch QuarkXPress, it automatically registers the PhotoJazz XT extension for use in the application.

Personalize BitJazz Tools: The Personalize BitJazz Tools application lets you personalize your copy of PhotoJazz with your name, your company name, and, if you have purchased PhotoJazz, your serial number.

If you previously evaluated PhotoJazz, and have now purchased a PhotoJazz license and received your serial number, you will need to rerun Personalize BitJazz Tools and enter your serial number in the space provided in order to turn off the magic watermarking feature.

If you previously purchased PhotoJazz Lite (or Pro) and have now upgraded to a PhotoJazz Pro (or Expert) license, you will need to rerun Personalize BitJazz Tools, press the Reset button to re-enable the Serial # field, and enter your new serial number to enable saving non-RGB (or 16-bit-channel) images without magic watermarks.

If you accidentally make a mistake and type in the incorrect serial number, you will still be able to view and decompress PhotoJazz image files, but you will not be able to compress them without watermarking. You can rerun the Personalize BitJazz Tools application at any time and press the Reset button to enter the correct serial number.

The Personalize BitJazz Tools application is installed in the "BitJazz Tools 2.0" folder.

InstallPhotoJazz Log File or setuplog.txt: The PhotoJazz installation log file keeps a log of what it installed where and when. This may help you diagnose any installation problems.

On the Macintosh, the PhotoJazz installation log file is called "InstallPhotoJazz Log File".

In Windows, the PhotoJazz installation log file is called "setuplog.txt".

The PhotoJazz installation log file is created in the "BitJazz Tools 2.0" folder.

ReadMe!: The ReadMe! document contains installation notes and late-breaking release notes that didn't make it into this User Manual.

The ReadMe! document is installed in the "BitJazz Tools 2.0" folder.

PhotoJazz Manual: The PhotoJazz 2 User Manual is this document, giving detailed user-oriented information on system requirements, installation, features, license levels, and usage with various applications.

The latest version of this document is available on-line on the BitJazz website.

The PhotoJazz 2 User Manual is installed in the "BitJazz Tools 2.0:Documentation" folder.
