Adobe Photoshop
Non-Image Data

PhotoJazz ordinarily saves all of Photoshop's non-image data with each image, including paths, guides, grids, file information (such as captions and copyright information), page setup information, and thumbnail previews. This non-image data can amount to a substantial fraction of the compressed file size. If you are certain you do not need to save this data, choose File > Save a Copy As… and check the Exclude Non-Image Data box. Note that this option is not available in the File > Save As… dialog.

If you exclude non-image data for images with alpha and spot channels in any format (including Photoshop's native PSD), Photoshop 5.x forgets whether the extra channels are alpha or spot channels. Until Adobe fixes this problem, if you need to reset this information in Photoshop, remember that, in Photoshop's Channels palette, the primary colors (typically RGB or CMYK) always come first, then the spot colors, then the alpha channels.

If you exclude non-image data for monotone/duotone/tritone/quadtone images, Adobe Photoshop 5.x cannot reopen the files. This is true for Photoshop 2 format, PhotoJazz format, and Raw format. The problem does not occur for the original Photoshop format or Encapsulated Postscript (EPS).

Often the largest pieces of non-image data are the Macintosh and Windows thumbnail images, which typically occupy 4K to 5K bytes each. The Macintosh thumbnail is visible as a Preview in the Open dialog, and is used by several asset management tools. If you don't want to save either of the thumbnails for an image, select File > Preferences > Saving Files and set the Save Previews pop-up in the Preferences dialog to Ask When Saving. Then, when you use File > Save As… or File > Save a Copy As…, in the Image Previews section at the bottom of the Save dialog, uncheck the Macintosh Thumbnail and Windows Thumbnail boxes. You can also elect not to save a custom picture icon, visible in the Finder, by unchecking the Icon box here.

As of Adobe Photoshop 5.5 for Windows, thumbnail previews still do not work for any file-format plug-in, including PhotoJazz.

PhotoJazz also ordinarily saves the ICC color profiles with each image, which typically occupy between 900 bytes and 400K bytes --small to huge. Depending on your workflow, you may not need to embed these in each image; Ask your printer or service bureau if you are unsure. If you don't want to embed the ICC profiles, select File > Color Settings > Profile Setup… and, in the Embed Profiles section of the Profiles dialog, uncheck the RGB, CMYK, and Grayscale boxes. Note that Adobe Photoshop will not embed profiles when using Save a Copy As… if Exclude Non-Image Data is checked.

Adobe Photoshop 5.0 and earlier had problems with ICC profile support, so we recommend that all users upgrade to Adobe Photoshop 5.0.2 or later. You can download a free Adobe Photoshop 5.0.2 Update for Macintosh or Windows from the Adobe web-site.
