Apple PictureViewer
Pixel Formats

PhotoJazz QT supports all photo-quality pixel formats supported by PictureViewer, including Grayscale, RGB Color, and CMYK Color, with an optional alpha channel, up to 16 bits per channel.

PhotoJazz QT converts many pixel formats on the fly for progressive tile display and to minimize memory requirements. For details, see the Color Conversions Table. Those not handled by PhotoJazz QT are handled by QuickTime, without progressive tile display, by buffering up the entire image and hence requiring potentially much more memory.

PhotoJazz supports more photo-quality pixel formats than QuickTime, and the QuickTime engine supports more pixel formats than the standard QuickTime exporters and codecs. As a result, information may be lost when using PictureViewer to export images to different file types. The following table gives PictureViewer's output pixel format for all high-quality input pixel formats supported by QuickTime (plus a few more for symmetry) and for all perfect-fidelity output file formats supported by QuickTime:

Italics indicate pixel-format conversion.
Red indicates information loss, whether from reduction of channel precision, from channel loss, or from conversion to a smaller color space.
1 This pixel format is not supported by QuickTime.

PhotoJazz QT does not currently support any lower-quality pixel formats, such as 1-, 2-, or 4-Bit Gray, nor any variant of Y'CbCr (commonly misnamed Yuv).

PictureViewer does not support L*a*b* or multichannel images, and cannot open images in these color modes.

PictureViewer does not support spot colors or multiple alpha channels. These channels are ignored on input.
