Adobe After Effects provides a number of ways of setting up rendering jobs for different purposes:

Most of these rendering jobs first get posted to the Rendering Queue, where you can check and adjust them before executing them.

Queueing a Movie Rendering of Source Footage

To set up a movie-rendering job for source footage according to the current Movie Default,

  1. Project Window Select the source footage, which can be either a movie or a still image, in the After Effects Project Window.
  2. Composition > Add To Render Queue Select Composition > Add To Render Queue from the menu bar in After Effects to add a job to the After Effects Render Queue for converting the selected footage into a movie.
  3. Note that this action will also create a composition based on the selected footage, and add the new composition to the Project Window.

Queueing a Movie Rendering of a Composition

To set up a movie-rendering job of a composition according to the current Movie Default,

  1. Select the composition by one of the following methods:

    • Project Composition Select the composition in the After Effects Project Window.
    • Composition Select the composition's Composition Window in After Effects.
    • Timeline Select the composition's Timeline Window in After Effects.
  2. Set up a rendering job for the selected composition and add it to the Render Queue for converting the selected composition into a movie by selecting one of the following menu items from the menu bar in After Effects:

    • Composition > Add To Render Queue Composition > Add To Render Queue.
    • Composition > Make Movie Composition > Make Movie.

or

  1. Window > Render Queue Select Window > Render Queue from the menu bar of After Effects
  2. to bring up the Render Queue Window.

  3. Project Composition Select the composition in the After Effects Project Window.
  4. Queue Drop Drag and drop the selected composition in the After Effects Render Queue Window.

Queueing a Frame Rendering of a Frame of a Composition

To set up a frame-rendering job using the current Frame Default for a frame of a composition,

  1. Select the desired frame of the composition using one of the following methods:

    • Time Controls the controls in the Time Controls Palette
    • Timeline Controls the time controls in the Timeline Window
  2. Select one of the following two windows belonging to the desired composition:

    • Composition the Composition Window
    • Timeline the Timeline Window
  3. Select Composition > Save Frame As > File... Select Composition > Save Frame As > File... from the menu bar in Adobe After Effects.

Queueing a Movie Proxy Rendering of Source Footage

To set up a movie-proxy-rendering job for source footage according to the current Movie Proxy Default,

  1. Project Window Select the source footage, which can be either a movie or a still image, in the After Effects Project Window.
  2. Create Proxy > Movie Control-click on the selected footage item in the Project Window and select Create Proxy > Movie from the contextual pop-up menu to add a job to the After Effects Render Queue for converting the selected footage into a movie proxy.
  3. Note that this action will also add a Post-Render Action of Set Proxy for the rendering job. In addition, it will create a composition based on the selected footage, and add the new composition to the Project Window.

Queueing a Movie Proxy Rendering of a Composition

To set up a movie-proxy-rendering job of a composition according to the current Movie Proxy Default,

  1. Project Composition Select the composition in the After Effects Project Window.
  2. Create Proxy > Movie Control-click on the selected composition in the Project Window and select Create Proxy > Movie from the contextual pop-up menu to add a job to the After Effects Render Queue for converting the selected composition into a movie proxy.
  3. Note that this action will also add a Post-Render Action of Set Proxy for the rendering job.

Queueing a Frame Proxy Rendering of Source Footage

To set up a frame-proxy-rendering job for source footage according to the current Frame Default,

  1. Project Window Select the source footage, which can be either a movie or a still image, in the After Effects Project Window.
  2. Create Proxy > Still Control-click on the selected footage item in the Project Window and select Create Proxy > Still from the contextual pop-up menu to add a job to the After Effects Render Queue for converting the selected footage into a frame proxy.
  3. Note that this action will also add a Post-Render Action of Set Proxy for the rendering job. In addition, it will create a composition based on the selected footage, and add the new composition to the Project Window.

Queueing a Frame Proxy Rendering of a Composition

To set up a frame-proxy-rendering job of a composition according to the current Frame Default,

  1. Project Composition Select the composition in the After Effects Project Window.
  2. Create Proxy > Still Control-click on the selected composition in the Project Window and select Create Proxy > Still from the contextual pop-up menu to add a job to the After Effects Render Queue for converting the selected composition into a frame proxy.
  3. Note that this action will also add a Post-Render Action of Set Proxy for the rendering job.

Queueing a RAM Preview Movie of a Composition

To set up a RAM-Preview-rendering job of a composition according to the current RAM Preview Default, save the RAM Preview movie to a file, and play the RAM Preview movie,

  1. Select the composition by one of the following methods:

    • Project Composition Select the composition in the After Effects Project Window.
    • Composition Select the composition's Composition Window in After Effects.
    • Timeline Select the composition's Timeline Window in After Effects.
  2. Composition > Save RAM Preview... Select Composition > Save RAM Preview... from the menu bar in After Effects to add a job to the After Effects Render Queue for creating a RAM Preview of the composition
  3. and bring up the Output Movie To Dialog

  4. Save As Name the output movie file in the Save As text field at the top of the Output Movie To dialog box.
  5. Save Click the Save button at the bottom right of the Output Movie To dialog box
  6. Note that this action will also add the RAM Preview rendering job to the Render Queue and immediately display the frames of the preview as they are rendered.

Rendering an Unqueued RAM Preview Movie of a Composition

To immediately render and display a RAM Preview of a composition according to the current RAM Preview Default without adding the rendering to the Render Queue,

  1. Select the composition by one of the following methods:

    • Composition Select the composition's Composition Window in After Effects.
    • Timeline Select the composition's Timeline Window in After Effects.
  2. Composition > Preview > RAM Preview Select Composition > Preview > RAM Preview from the menu bar in After Effects to render and display a RAM Preview of the selected composition.
  3. Note that this action will not add the RAM Preview rendering job to the Render Queue. If you want to adjust the parameters of the RAM Preview without changing the RAM Preview output template, use Save RAM Preview... instead.

Queueing a PreRendering of a Composition

To set up a movie-prerendering job of a composition according to the current Pre-Render Default,

  1. Select the composition by one of the following methods:

    • Project Composition Select the composition in the After Effects Project Window.
    • Composition Select the composition's Composition Window in After Effects.
    • Timeline Select the composition's Timeline Window in After Effects.
  2. Composition > Pre-render Select Composition > Pre-render from the menu bar in After Effects to set up a prerendering job for the selected composition and add it to the Render Queue for converting the selected composition into a movie.
  3. Note that this action will also add a Post-Render Action of Import & Replace Usage for the rendering job.
