BitJazz SheerVideo FAQ Formats: Resolutions
Does SheerVideo support HD resolution?
Does SheerVideo support SD, NTSC, PAL, or SECAM resolution?
Does SheerVideo support XGA, D4, D16, or arbitrary resolution?
Does SheerVideo support film, 2K, Cineon Half, or Cineon resolution?
Does SheerVideo support SD, NTSC, PAL, or SECAM resolution?
Yes, all Sheer encoders and decoders support all uncompressed Standard Definition video resolutions,
including NTSC, which is around 640 to 720 by 480 to 486 p/f (pixels per frame) at around 29.97 or 30 f/s (frames per second)
as well as PAL and SÉCAM, which are around 720 x 576 p/f at 25 f/s.
The exact number of visible scanlines per frame and especially of visible pixels per scanline
varies quite a bit among different implementations of SD,
depending on the vertical and horizontal blanking interval
as well as on the horizontal sampling frequency.
SheerVideo supports all such variations, in all supported pixel formats,
progressive and interlaced, at all frame rates, on both Mac and Windows.
In fact, SheerVideo can encode and decode SD video faster than real time on any current personal computer.
On a medium-range personal computer such as a single-CPU 1 GHz Mac G4, for example,
SheerVideo can encode SD 4:2:2 at 5.5 times as fast (110 MiB/s) as real time (20 MiB/s),
and decode SD 4:2:2 at 5 times as fast (100 MiB/s) as real time.

Does SheerVideo support HD resolution?
Yes, all Sheer encoders and decoders support all uncompressed High Definition video resolutions,
including 720 x 480, 960 x 720, 1280 x 720, 1440 x 1080, and 1920 x 1080;
at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second; in all supported pixel formats,
progressive and interlaced, at all frame rates, on both Mac and Windows.
In fact, on a moderately fast personal computer such as a dual-CPU 1.25 GHz Mac G4,
SheerVideo is more than twice as fast (250 MiB/s) as
the highest-definition HD Y'CbCr 4:2:2 8b video (120 MiB/s),
and 38% faster than the highest-definition HD RGB 8b or Y'CbCr 8b 4:4:4,
at 30 f/s, which is ample speed for real-time capture and playback.
On a faster computer, SheerVideo can even make it possible to do real-time HD editing.

Does SheerVideo support film, 2K, Cineon Half, or Cineon resolution?
Yes, all Sheer encoders and decoders support all digitized film resolutions,
including 2K (2048 x 1152 and 2048 x 1536), Cineon Half (1828 x 1332), Cineon (3656 x 2048) and on up,
in all supported pixel formats.
In fact, on a moderately fast personal computer such as a dual-CPU 1.25 GHz Mac G4,
SheerVideo is more than 50% faster (250 MiB/s) than
the 2K wide-screen scanned film,
which, at 2048 x 1152 RGB 8b pixels per frame and 24 frames per second,
works out to 162 MiB/s.
Real-time digitized film editing, however, requires a faster computer.

Does SheerVideo support XGA, D4, D16, or arbitrary resolution?
Yes, all Sheer encoders and decoders support arbitrary frame resolutions,
including anything from 1 pixel to 1 billion pixels, in all supported pixel formats,
progressive and interlaced, at all frame rates, on both Mac and Windows.
This includes nonstandard resolutions as well as other standard resolutions
such as XGA (1024 x 768), D4 (1440 x 1024), and D16 (2880 x 2048).
If you need SheerVideo to handle frame sizes larger than 1 billion pixels,
