Apple PictureViewer
Image Views

PictureViewer does not cache the decompressed PhotoJazz image (nor decompressed images of any other type). Instead, PictureViewer relies on the PhotoJazz QT to decompress the image again whenever any part of it needs to be redisplayed. This lets PictureViewer operate on PhotoJazz images of any size with very little memory. PhotoJazz QT is smart enough to decompress only those tiles which are visible. This selective decompression feature is especially useful when zooming in on huge images.

As of version 4.1, PictureViewer for Macintosh has a bug such that it does not support progressive display for images whose resolution is set to a value other than 72dpi.

As of version 4.1, PictureViewer for Windows does not support progressive display for any images.

Because PhotoJazz QT has built-in support for basic spatial transformations, you see a progressive display of the visible tiles of a PhotoJazz image for all the transformations offered in PictureViewer's Image menu, including the scaling transformations, the rotations, and the reflections.

Scaling

PictureViewer offers two ways to scale an image: a set of menu items for common scale factors, and an invisible grow box for arbitrary window resizing.

To resize an image while maintaining the original aspect ratio:

  1. Select Image > Half Size to display the image at half the original width and height.

or

  1. Select Image > Normal Size to display the image at the original width and height.

or

  1. Select Image > Double Size to display the image at double the original width and height.

or

  1. Select Image > Fill Screen to grow the image to fill the screen, preserving its aspect ratio.

or

  1. Press in the lower right corner of the image and drag to the desired size.

Note that, although PictureViewer's windows don't have a grow icon, they still behave as if they did. Note also that PictureViewer's windows have no zoom box in the title bar.

To resize an image independently in width and height, without maintaining the aspect ratio:

  1. Press in the lower right corner and Shift-drag to the desired size.

Rotation

To rotate an image in quarter-cycle steps:

  1. Select Image > Rotate Left to rotate the image one quarter turn counterclockwise.

or

  1. Select Image > Rotate Right to rotate the image one quarter turn clockwise.

Reflection

To reflect an image about the vertical or horizontal axis:

  1. Select Image > Flip Horizontal to display the image backwards.

or

  1. Select Image > Flip Vertical to display the image upside-down.

Translation

Although PictureViewer's windows don't have scroll bars, if the window is too large to fit on your display you can still grab any edge of the window and move it around, even up under the menu bar.

For viewing convenience, PhotoJazz QT converts the pixels in the PhotoJazz source image to the pixel format of your display on the fly, so you don't have to wait for the whole windowful or the whole image to get decompressed before you see anything. See the Color Conversion feature for a table of pixel-format conversions built into PhotoJazz QT.

PhotoJazz QT also does its own masking, and only converts the visible pixels of the visible tiles, for even quicker results.
